Project Dragon
The nature of Project Dragon is very “real”. As students in the Honors U.S. History and Geography course document their learning throughout the year by building websites, a surprise awaits them at the end of the year when the designer/s of one website is picked to do a paid summer internship with an international company.
One of the most interesting and engaging projects I have been associated with is continuing into a second year. It is called Project Dragon!

reMODEL International is owned and operated by Lorrie MacGilvray and James La Trobe-Bateman. Lorrie is a graduate from Clintondale Community Schools (Class of 1974). reMODEL specializes in providing advice to businesses in the international healthcare manufacturing sector. Their expertise helps companies analyze the effects of a business decision in order to predict outcomes that would maximize efficiency and profits.
After recognizing some of the innovative things happening at Clintondale High School, she reached out. At that time, April 2014, I contacted her via LinkedIn hoping she would review some of the student produced websites and she agreed. Project Dragon was starting!
At the very time, reMODEL was searching for someone to move content from their existing website and put it into a new web product. After reviewing the websites that my history students created, it was decided that a Clintondale student could accomplish the task.
Both Lorrie and James found that my students had the skills necessary in regards to technology, writing, and verbal communication to help them meet their business goals and the first summer intern was named. Matt Furman was the first student picked by Lorrie and James (2014). The next year, Kevin Steinhebel (10th) and Tyler Speed (10th) accepted the position (2015) and Matt returned. This year, Alexis Primm will represent CHS as the student intern for 2016.
An initial meeting allows parents to meet Lorrie and James (see image above). The rest of the summer, interns work with reMODEL virtually using a product called WebEx. Interns receive the summer objectives listed in A Template 4 Success. I have developed A Template 4 Success as the mechanism that is used to communicate expectations to my students and now reMODEL has incorporated it into this venture as well. As you can see, there is a very strong connection between classroom and the “real” world. Go Dragons!
